Spotlight on an Environmental Health Clinician
Spotlight on an Environmental Health Clinician: Kenya Singleton, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC
My name is Kenya Singleton, and I’ve worked at VA Loma Linda for 16 years. For the first five years, I provided care within our primary care clinic, along with my role as a Compensation and Pension (C&P) and Environmental Health Clinician. Currently, I am the Director of C&P/Environmental Health and VISN 22 Lead Environmental Health Clinician.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, my VA Environmental Health department has focused on the Environmental Health Registry Programs and on offering care remotely. We are reaching out to Veterans who have registered for the Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry and want an in-person medical evaluation. We have been able to conduct these evaluations primarily via VA Video Connect (VVC).
Our Veterans and providers have found VVC to be a reliable and convenient means for the Veteran to connect with a provider, discuss health concerns, and receive medical care and management. VVC not only allows for the delivery of safe care during the pandemic, but it is a mainstay in the provision of medical care. We also conduct telephone evaluations for Veterans who are not able to use or are not comfortable with using VVC.
In support of COVID-19 operations, Chondra Shanks, PA, a C&P/Environmental Health Clinician, has been assisting within the COVID-19 Aftercare Team at the Loma Linda VA. Ms. Shanks and I also provide alternating weekend coverage with two other providers for COVID-19 notification calls.
At the Loma Linda VA, Environmental Health Coordinators and Clinicians welcome our Veterans and look forward to addressing their military exposure health concerns. We encourage Veterans like you to contact your primary health care provider, patient aligned care team (PACT), or Environmental Health Coordinator to address your military exposure health concerns, including registry information and how to obtain a medical evaluation.
