Caring for Veterans and Service Members Exposed to Chemical Warfare Agents
Service members may have been exposed to chemical warfare agents while destroying or handling explosive ordnance, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), while serving in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn between 2003 and 2011. VA and DoD have been working together to identify and provide services to military personnel exposed to chemical warfare agents, including a providing a clinical assessment and information about disability compensation.
Medical Screening of Qarmat Ali Veterans
VA and DoD completed the Qarmat Ali Medical Surveillance Program in 2011, and found no abnormalities related to hexavalent chromium exposure from the local water treatment facility. They are planning a second round of medical screening.
