Health Care for Gulf War Veterans

VA offers a variety of health care benefits to Gulf War Veterans, including a Gulf War Registry health exam and clinical treatment at VA's War Related Illness and Injury Study Center.

Eligibility for health care

Veterans first must enroll in VA's health care system to receive care. There are many ways a Veteran may qualify, including:

Served in the Persian Gulf from August 2, 1990 to November 11, 1998
Served in a combat theater after November 11, 1998 (extended period of eligibility for 5 years after discharge)
Have a military service-connected disability

Gulf War Registry and Burn Pit Registry

You do not need to enroll in VA's health care system to take part in health registries. Contact your local environmental health coordinator to learn more.

Gulf War Registry: Get an exam for possible long-term health problems related to Gulf War service, including during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry (AHOBPR 2.0): a research and operational database that combines aggregate Veteran and Service member data to help VA better understand, research, and ultimately treat the health challenges faced by Veterans exposed to airborne hazards and burn pits during their military service. Veterans and Service members who meet eligibility criteria -- per DOD records – will be automatically enrolled in AHOBPR 2.0. Learn more about the redesigned registry.

Treatment at War Related Illness and Injury Study Center

VA's War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) provides clinical expertise for Veterans with deployment health concerns or difficult-to-diagnose illnesses. WRIISCs are in three locations: Washington, DC; East Orange, NJ; and Palo Alto, CA.

For an appointment at a WRIISC, you need to get a referral. You must be enrolled in and receiving VA health care. Learn how to get a referral to a WRIISC.
