Health and Medicine Division Reports on Agent Orange

VA contracts with the Health and Medicine Division (HMD) (formally known as the Institute of Medicine) of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a non-governmental organization, to scientifically review evidence on the long-term health effects of Agent Orange and other herbicides on Vietnam Veterans.

HMD determines whether the evidence points to a statistically valid association that would suggest or establish a relationship between diseases studied and herbicide use.

Recent reports

HMD released Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 11 (2018) in November of 2018 on intergenerational effects from Agent Orange exposure. HMD did not find evidence of intergenerational effects, including birth defects, in the descendants of Vietnam Veterans resulting from Agent Orange exposure.

HMD released Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2014 in March of 2016.

HMD released Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft on Jan. 9, 2015. VA established qualification for benefits related to Agent Orange exposure for some Veterans due to this report.

VA continues to conduct research on the effects of Agent Orange and monitor the health issues of Vietnam War-Era Veterans.
