Provider Assessments of the Preparedness of Homebound Veterans

Project Lead: Tamar Wyte-Lake, D.P.T., M.P.H.

Homebound individuals have an illness, long-term care condition, or disability that limits their ability to leave their home without assistance. Consequently, homebound individuals are highly vulnerable to injury or mortality during a disaster.

VA home-based primary care (HBPC) providers connect homebound Veterans to VA medical and social services, and can help ensure that Veterans who have difficulty leaving their home are prepared for a disaster.

Findings and importance

This study:

  • Examines how VA HBPC providers assess the disaster preparedness of homebound Veterans
  • Seeks to identify ways to improve preparedness

The work will ultimately lead to the development of a toolkit that VA HBPC leadership and providers can use to guide HBPC disaster preparedness activities.
