Director of Policy, Health Outcomes Military Exposures

Peter D. Rumm, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P.M.

Dr. Rumm is the Director of Policy, Health Outcomes Military Exposures (HOME), leading many efforts on military environmental exposure topics.  He is a pediatrician/preventive medicine physician.  Previously, he worked at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in leadership roles with medical devices.  Dr. Rumm graduated from the Medical College of Georgia.  He later received his Master of Public Health from the University of Washington.   He is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM).  Dr. Rumm has served in leadership positions for ACPM, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and other medical associations.  He has been awarded advanced standing in the American College of Physician Executives.   

Dr. Rumm was formerly a Chief Medical Officer and state epidemiologist in the Wisconsin Division of Public Health. He has served two Army medical roles as a pediatric service chief. Dr. Rumm was appointed by the Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Children and Terrorism.  He was later an Associate professor at the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and directed a center on communication and preparedness. Dr. Rumm concurrently served on the Board of Directors of the Mercy Health Care System.  He has been on many other boards or committees.    He served six years on the review committee of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to oversee residency programs in preventive medicine and related specialties.   He co-founded WI Patient Safety Board and has had five academic appointments.  Dr. Rumm’s other former professional positions include: 1) Chief, Division of Epidemiology, The Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine in Landstuhl, Germany; and 2) Officer in Charge, Fort Clayton and other Canal Zone Health Care Clinics, Panama ; and 3) in the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General.

Dr. Rumm received a lifetime alumni achievement award from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Other awards include the Order of Malta in Italy, the Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award for his region while at Ft. McClellan, and the prestigious Expert Field Medical Badge as a young officer. Dr. Rumm is a graduate of VA’s Leadership VA program and the Health Care Leadership Development Program and the DoD VA CAPTSONE Course. He has several dozen publications and 2 book chapters and has given dozens of presentations.
