Surveillance Military Environmental Exposures

Surveillance Military Environmental Exposures (SMEE) is a division of VA’s Health Outcomes Military Exposures (HOME) program office. SMEE collects and analyzes military environmental exposure and health-related data. The SMEE team includes professionals with diverse expertise, including epidemiologists, statisticians, librarians, and policy analysts.

SMEE’s key activities include:

  • Providing rapid response to emerging military exposure issues that impact Veteran health
  • Performing health surveillance of Veteran cohorts with unique military environmental exposures
  • Conducting scientific assessments and formal evaluations to help VA determine if certain health conditions qualify as presumptive conditions
  • Overseeing the Toxic Exposure Research Clearinghouse, as required by PACT Act Section 509
  • Providing military environmental exposure research library services for HOME studies
